Globally, approximately 37 dinonga eidu sculptures entered European, U.S., and Australian museums and private collections during the preliminary phases and the core period of German colonial rule. Most of these carvings had been taken off the island before 1885. Due to their small number, their reception in the 'Global North' has been marked by discussion about their ‘authenticity’, provenance, and of contemporary ‘replicas’.
